New research led by the Institute’s Professor Andre La Gerche shows fitter people use around 11,500 fewer total heartbeats per day than non-athletes. Even though athletes’ hearts pump harder during training, their lower resting rates save beats the rest of the day:

💡A/Professor Dr Dr James Otton is using AI to transform routine heart scans into a powerful screening tool that could better predict heart attacks and strokes and make advanced heart screening affordable worldwide.
Congrats to all involved.

💡Dr Vaibhao Janbandhu and his team are uncovering how heart valves become stiff and calcified - the root cause of valvular heart disease. By doing so they hope they can detect the disease earlier and develop preventative treatments.

💡 Dr Jeanette Villanueva and her team will test whether hearts from donors can be better preserved using temperature-controlled cold storage – work that could save more lives through transplantation.

A tool I helped create a few years ago. It was pretty straightforward to write (~one week with a few devs) but apparently it’s really useful for certain types of research!

A great collaboration between @atlassian.bsky.social and @victorchang.edu.au.
