Poem, Creating a Path to Harmony Should have been simple— buy decomposed granite the color of dirt and some dark rocks, but he came home with light-hued pebbles and stones that the girl at the store told him would be pretty when wet, "Which means," I said, "they'll be beautiful twenty-one days a year," to which he replied, "Next time get them yourself." I was annoyed and so was he, but we raked and tamped dirt, spread the rocks, all one thousand pounds, and shaped an inviting path toward the front door. And when it rains, the rocks are very pretty. Sometimes my husband sprays them with a hose. And then they are beautiful.

My poem was published in "Autumn Sky Poetry Daily" some years ago. It's what I think of when I hear the word spectacle.
Poem Hallelujah This Sky Working downtown today, clouds in every window of the high rise across the way: big white ones vast enough to house God and sweet baby Jesus, all of heaven's angels and saints. I'm telling you, it's a miracle sky, sky in a Bible, sky so gorgeous it can fix anything that ails you, and it's reflected in every single window on all twenty-four floors of the building across from me, a colossal glass cloud there to behold. The attorneys drone: question, answer question, answer. I take down ever do you recall, isn't it true, pursuant to, but I want to stop the deposition and applaud this sky. Hallelujah this sky. Devour this sky. Stuff myself with pure white fluffiness, slip clouds into their transcript.

Poem Winter Solstice Loneliness says yes when the answer's no. Loneliness spends the night just to wake up warm. Morning smells like coffee and wrinkled sheets. A pillow feather floats to the floor, under the bed with the dust that clings to missing things. I wipe steam from the window with my sleeve. Outside is wet and gray, the color of a toolbox in the back of a pickup truck. A bird settles on the lawn. Another flies away.

Poem, The Glory of Resilience I believe in dandelions, hardy plants surviving in cracks between cement and asphalt, raggedy green leaves we drive over daily, never noticing their quiet beauty, our gutters bright with tiny yellow blooms.

Poem: Some Days are a Long Gray Slog Hope can be difficult to hold onto—floods and fires, political gloom, hunger on every street corner, an old man’s grocery bag stolen from his arms. This world can crush you. But. There are pansies. There are pinecones. There is the scent of sage after rain. Look up. There are birds sitting on the tip tops of trees.
