For a very smart one... Camus (L'etranger is a good starter), Maupassant short stories are good if somewhat depressing. I really enjoyed Marcel Pagnol too - La Gloire de mon Pere and Le Chateau de ma mere. I'd love to recommend Les Liaisons Dangereuses too but maybe wait a couple of years...a
