Computers lack even the understanding that it's a game played for fun. They don't understand how players play, their styles, their quirks. They simply play the position without ever looking up from the board.

You could call it understanding chess in a sense, but not fully.

my conception of it is that sure the machines really understand how to win at chess, or at least maximise their chance of winning.

but do they really understand what chess is? no not really, they're just solving the puzzle put in front of them. they don't know why they solve they just do
