Her mom calls her Atsuko cuz she knows she doesn't like it, but when stuff gets serious, it's Akko. Also, the parents have already clocked how much Diana CaresTM.

[Panel 2] “–so there is no reason to be worried about that.” Like this was going to convince the woman who educated that troublemaker. At least she is softened by Diana’s innocence. [Panel 3] With a big smile, Akito answers to Diana’s blatant attempt at shielding Akko from more nagging “Thank you for taking care of her, Diana-san. We are very grateful.” “More that you are willing to lie in her name, we know the trouble she gets herself into.” Adds her mom, putting an end to the charade. [Panel 4] Diana is embarrassed to have been caught, but that’s what you get for meddling in a daughter-mother discussion. “P-please be sure to enjoy your vacation and don’t worry about your daughter’s well-being.” She assures, even if she can’t meet their eye right now. [Panel 5] No more joking around, the mother’s traits adopt a more sincere and saddened expression, she starts apologizing : “Akko, we are very sorry you couldn’t come with us on the cruise. Next break we’ll take you camping to compensate, we promise.” [Panel 6] But her daughter’s also more understanding than she let on. “Nah, I know. I’m glad you did. It’s been a while since the last time you went on vacation just the two of you.” She candidly replies. [Panel 7] “But I’ll take the camping as compensation.” She cheerfully adds, this heartfelt moment won’t stop her from negotiating ! [Panel 8] The mom’s gaze shifts to Diana as she addresses her. “Do you often go camping, Diana-san ?” [Panel 9] Diana didn’t expect to be asked about her hobbies and a bit surprised, she immediately answers “Oh ! I can't say that I do, not at all.” [Panel 10] Akko’s dad is scheming. “Oh, then that gives me an idea–” [Panel 11] “–why don’t you bring Diana to Japan next time ?” He joyfully offers. [Panel 12] “Hey, stop bothering Diana ! She has lots of things to do !” Akko takes it like another joke, and tries to start bickering again, after all, this is a bit ridiculous, going to her home country with Diana, to go camping ? That’s too much ! But she’s too busy shouting at her phone to notice Diana has her word to say. “That would be…” [Panel 13] The pause in her answer is filled with emotions, her finger starts fidgeting on her leg. She was considering it, and she finds it “...lovely.”

Staring at the screen with a welcoming smile, he starts “Ah, Diana-san, very nice to meet you. Thank you so much for taking care of Akko-chan.” [Panel 2] “The pleasure’s mine, Akko’s been great company.” she replies, looking at Akko, proudly displaying an angelic innocent smile. “I hope you are having a great time on your cruise.” [Panel 3] “Ah、 はい、はい! (“Hai、 Hai! [Yes, yes !]) Very much ! We don’t go on vacations often !” “That’s because you never want to spend money on trips !” complains Akko’s mom as she leans on her husband’s shoulders. [Panel 4] “おかああさん、(“Okaaasan! [Mooom !]) don’t embarrass me in front of Diana!” complains Akko with a pout. “Yes, what will Diana-san think?” agrees Akko’s father from the phone. [Panel 5] “We already changed our daughter for a trip, there is no hope for us!” She jokes, striking a dramatic pose that will surely get under said daughter’s skin. [Panel 6] “Ah, you admit it, then !” Akko shouts, playing in her mother’s antics. [Panel 7] “After all the work you must have done to send Akko to Luna Nova, you two deserve a nice trip.” [Panel 8] “Atsuko, you had not told us Diana-san was so polite, try to learn some matters from her this summer.” She snarkily remarks. [Panel 9] Akko pouts “If you wanted me to have manners, you should have taught them to me yourselves !” she finishes and sticks out her tongue with a very audible “MLEH” [Panel 10] Diana is a bit surprised by how Akko responds to her mom. She didn’t have that sort of relationship with her mother and so she wonders if their banter is usual or if they’re exaggerating it in front of a public, but it’s nice to see they’re close like that.

Kiriko-san and Akito-san are Atsuko's parents! I spent a long while thinking what kind of parents could produce a witch like Akko and here's my take! Hope you learn to love them as we do <3

[Panel 2] “Let me just–” And she somehow manages to fit herself in that narrow space, waking up the poor dog who didn’t ask to be pushed around. Diana for her part is just as surprised… by how physically close they are right now, and Akko doesn’t even seem a little conscious of it, focused on finding the right angle for the camera. [Panel 3] Akko’s parents are not even looking at their screen, too busy playfully chatting together. “Hey ! Stop bickering !” She won’t allow them to ignore this tremendous effort ! [Panel 4] “Otousan, Okaasan, this is Diana.” All smiles, she turns her head towards a very awkwardly waving Diana, still too impressed by the whole situation. [Panel 5] Akko’s father is in awe ! “あ、きれい! (“A, kirei!” [“Ah, what a beauty !”]) Akko immediately cuts him with an indignant “お父さん!” (“Otousan!” [“Dad !”]) [Panel 6] Akko’s mother turns her head to her husband once more and asks him sternly “Akito, behave.” in English this time. This will make communication for Diana simpler for sure. [Panel 7] Diana’s still surprised by this sudden “meet my parents” ordeal, but now that she’s seen them, it’s easier to introduce herself and greet them. “Hello. It’s nice to meet you, Mr and Ms Kagari.”

This is amazing??? 😭😭😭 I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about these witches and how everything in the show affected them and their arcs so that you can actually ser Akko in there means so much! ✨
