Additionally, its not difficult to quietly attach a device to the NMEA2000 bus (especially as staff). Something like this (NOT USED IN THIS INSTANCE) which provided my team with WIFI access to ship's network using a RaspberryPI. Ideally you'd want to use a dark enclosure and tape :D

While the critical devices are on a dedicated network (probably NMEA2000), they arent typically air gapped and often bridged by Electronic Charting Displays making them a ripe target.

The article mentions that crew members were arrested. So its likely that had a more direct access to sensitive locations. In general though, its a network like any other. It can be setup without firewalls or restrictions.
