@society4science.bsky.social CEO @mayaajmera.bsky.social is speaking at #concordia25 about "collaboration" and "well-being" in the future workplace. Meanwhile, @sn-media-guild.bsky.social workers have spent 516 days at the bargaining table with little to show for it. Yikes. 😬

No matter how you write it out, that’s a ridiculously long time. Workers at @sciencenews.bsky.social and @snexplores.bsky.social deserve a fair and timely contract.

@society4science.bsky.social and @mayaajmera.bsky.social this is not it. ✊

Today marks 500 days since we started bargaining. Seems like you’re a little behind on that fair contract, @society4science.bsky.social. It’s all good. Here’s a calendar to help you keep track of the important things. As science journalists, meeting deadlines is kind of our thing.

There's a NASA presser happening now in which acting admin Duffy said "This very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars." That doesn't mean it is a sign of life. We covered this cool rock in 2024, paper in Nature is out today: 🧪🔭

Just a few years ago I was quoting sources who were so excited about the promise of mRNA vaccines. Now, all the progress is at risk.

Winding down mRNA vaccine research for infectious diseases may not seem like a big deal. But it could have a chilling effect on the development of mRNA-based medicines in general. That includes meds for treating cancer.

Here’s what we stand to lose:

mRNA vaccines hold promise for many diseases. Now the tech is under fire
Researchers warn that halting federal contracts for mRNA vaccine research could weaken pandemic preparedness and slow medical advances.

In case anyone needs a timeline cleanse for no reason whatsoever, I wrote two fun stories last week.

One talks about what researchers are learning about spotted lanternflies and how to control them with natural predators, parasitoid wasps and fungi

Squashing the spotted lanternfly problem may require enlisting other species
The invasive spotted lanternfly has spread to 17 states and can threaten vineyards. But bats, fungi, dogs and even trees may help control them.

Insects and zombifying fungi have a relationship that stretches back 99 million years

And how is this known?

HHS is winding down mRNA vaccine development to shift toward what it calls “safer” vaccine platforms. But the technology is safe and effective, scientists have found. Read about the Nobel Prize–winning work behind these vaccines here:
Early mRNA research that led to COVID-19 vaccines wins 2023 medicine Nobel Prize
Biochemists Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman devised mRNA modifications to make vaccines that trigger good immune responses instead of harmful ones.
