It's not actually a fact of life tbh. You cannot expect a former UK colony with no natural resources to have the same living standards as Europe within 50 years.
Most states which have opened their markets gradually and wisely have benefited from trade- you cannot argue against that!

I can't help but disagree with you calling Mauritius a "very poor state". While not a developed state yet, we have one of the highest HDI in Africa due to the benefits of trade and open markets.
