We would at least like to see the city guarantee consistently accessible, safe sidewalks, crosswalks, and bus stops along our priority 1 and 2 routes within 24 hours, which is the same target we aim for with plowing streets for cars.

This is the bare minimum, #A2Council. How can you make it happen?

4. Set expectations with a guaranteed response SLA on SeeClickFix tickets on these corridors.

3. Perform regular QA inspections on sidewalks and crosswalks cleared by city contractors.

2. Reinspect intersections along priority 1 and 2 routes for windrows at crosswalks after plowing adjacent streets.

1. After each significant snowfall or ice event, conduct proactive enforcement on priority 1 and 2 routes. The city already prioritizes these routes for plowing (snowplowmap.a2gov.org) and they represent major corridors, bus routes, school routes, etc.

Also, the Transportation Department uses a different definition of “serious injury” than the police department. That’s a major cause for concern. All K and A crashes should be analyzed for improvements that could prevent or reduce severity of injury, and should count against our Vision Zero goal.

We are quite familiar with this tragedy. “Single-pedestrian crashes” such as this should count against Vision Zero goals. It’s completely unacceptable and preventable.
