I invite everyone bothered by piracy to grab their best adulting pants, build a nice bridge, and get over it.

Once again I feel the need to get the megaphone:

THE INTERNET INTERPRETS CENSORSHIP AS DAMAGE AND ROUTES AROUND IT.

For better and worse.

Noooooo whyyyy :’( RIP to a glorious legend

It didn’t come up much, thankfully.

But I still remember the sick feeling in my stomach, reading that email. The knowledge that what I made in good faith could be twisted into something evil.

Never again, man. That is bad juju. Bad for the soul.

If anyone in Hootsuite has any soul, they should be quitting/refusing to work on anything ICE can use. Like hard stop. No tech for you, because fuck you all.

I was in the position, at my job, of saying no to stuff if I wanted to because I was one of the best at what I did.

That algorithm is dead and gone. I have one of the only copies left somewhere on my hard drive, and the knowledge of how it works and how to make it do its magic. And I will never, ever hand something I made over to fucking fascists.
January 27, 2026 at 7:27 PM
I’m thinking about all this now because of Hootsuite going in on doing work for ICE. Like, wtf is going through the heads of their devs.

That could have been my work, being used to abuse innocent people.

Regular reminder that all devs should have ethics training, etc etc

For the record: I do not work for the cops or the military, and I definitely do not work for the military of a country that I am not a citizen of and that is clearly run by deranged weirdos.
January 27, 2026 at 7:27 PM
I did my research and confirmed that this person was indeed real and also did work for the US Army and had the rank they said they did, and then I deleted that email so fucking fast.

Because I have never in all my goddamn life been so scared of an email.
January 27, 2026 at 7:27 PM
Anyway I had a person reach out to me. They seemed nice. But they were asking about my work in the context of… the US Army may be interested in this thing, this… reliable fuzzy text pattern matching.

This algorithm was not in any way related to AI. It was a brute force method that, with the right metal behind it, could do stuff that seemed magical and AI-like.

It was far, far more reliable than AI, and I was proud of it at the time for being useful and helping authors.
