Good point! An important task for VDL would be succession planning. And Article 17 TEU should be tweaked to include a term limit for the Commission President. Not sure she has either on the radar for her Aix la Chapelle speech today. But in 2034 she would still be younger than Trump or Biden.

Instructive overview of three rounds of Spitzenkandidaten by @vkreilinger.bsky.social
My view is that the 2024 experience was at most a 'glass half-full': VDL played ball but only half-heartedly and did not face serious competition

BILD: top jobs with Chancellor #Merz

CDU:
Thorsten Frei: Chair of CDU/CSU group or Home Affairs or Minister in the Chancellery
Carsten Linnemann: Chair of CDU/CSU group or Economic Affairs and Labour
Julia Klöckner: Speaker/President of the Bundestag
Silvia Breher: Family
Katrin Prien: Education
vkreilinger.bsky.social
My thoughts: SPD will certainly claim Labour and Social Affairs and get more key portfolios
vkreilinger.bsky.social
SPD:
Lars Klingbeil: Finance (and Vice Chancellor?)
Boris Pistorius: Defence, Home Affairs or Foreign Affairs
Bärbel Bas: Health and Social Affairs or Chair of SPD parliamentary group (after Klingbeil)

All other current SPD ministers uncertain/shaky (“wackelig”), according to BILD
vkreilinger.bsky.social
My thought: CSU to get max three ministries, one of them a key portfolio, always claimed transport in the past
vkreilinger.bsky.social
CSU:
Alexander Dobrindt: Home Affairs
Florian Hahn: Defence
Dorothea Bär: not clear (Digital Affairs?)
Günther Felßner: Agriculture
vkreilinger.bsky.social
My thoughts: Did BILD forget Jens Spahn? International favourites such as Norbert Röttgen and Armin Laschet with little chances. Ralph Brinkhaus? Baden Württemberg? Andreas Jung? Environment and Climate Protection?
