I have some experience with this, when we're converting coal plants to fossil gas it usually results in quite a bit of job loss. There's retraining offered but most of the time the townspeople don't go for it. The town empties out and those who can't/won't leave are poor and bitter.

One thing I think the Commonwealth militaries broadly do right is making awards pretty hard to get. We have our usual deployment badges but broadly speaking you really have to do some shit to have a rack. I've met plenty of really experienced guys who've done a lot without two rows.

In basic they made us go 'ziplining' which actually was running up and down a hallway holding a coat hanger above my head along a piece of string while wearing a gas mask and screaming "WHEEEEE" the whole time. Western militaries have a long proud tradition of fucking with recruits without violence
