I was just reading Appendix A of Part 1 of the OSHA Accepted Fit Test Protocols for the Respiratory Protection Program when I came across this lovely procedure under "Test Exercises".
(1) Normal breathing. In a normal standing position, without talking, the subject shall breathe normally. (2) Deep breathing. In a normal standing position, the subject shall breathe slowly and deeply, taking caution so as not to hyperventilate. (3) Turning head side to side. Standing in place, the subject shall slowly turn his/her head from side to side between the extreme positions on each side. The head shall be held at each extreme momentarily so the subject can inhale at each side. (4) Moving head up and down. Standing in place, the subject shall slowly move his/her head up and down. The subject shall be instructed to inhale in the up position (i.e., when looking toward the ceiling). (5) Talking. The subject shall talk out loud slowly and loud enough so as to be heard clearly by the test conductor. The subject can read from a prepared text such as the Rainbow Passage, count backward from 100, or recite a memorized poem or song. Rainbow Passage When the sunlight strikes raindrops in the air, they act like a prism and form a rainbow. The rainbow is a division of white light into many beautiful colors. These take the shape of a long round arch, with its path high above, and its two ends apparently beyond the horizon. There is, according to legend, a boiling pot of gold at one end. People look, but no one ever finds it. When a man looks for something beyond reach, his friends say he is looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

This poor hen looks exhausted, but after a couple of months of laying eggs, sitting on eggs, hatching eggs, and keeping chicks fed, watered and alive, she finally got them all up on the roost. You're doing a great job, Blueberry!
Blueberry, a lovely silver and gold Icelandic hen, is sitting on a roost. Her feathers are disheveled and her comb is pale and drooping. From underneath her belly feathers poke out the tails of chicks who are sitting on her feet. Reuben, an out-of-focus rooster, is in the background watching everyone.

I think we've almost achieved a dusting in Little Washington, with a light, steady snowfall around 11am.
A snow-dusted drive winds past some sycamore trees, a chicken coop and a frozen pond with a view of Jenkins Mountain on the horizon. Rappahannock County, VA.

The ground is covered in snow. A stone chimney and mountains can be seen in the background. In the foreground, three domestic ducks are assessing the situation up Harris Hollow in Little Washington, VA. Why don't ducks' feet freeze? Because they have a natural heat-exchanger in their feet. In waterfowl, the veins and arteries in the feet run next to each other, exchanging heat and preventing the feet from freezing. The warm blood also heats up the cold blood coming from the feet before it goes back into the body, preventing it from bringing down the core temperature of the bird. Add that to an exquisitely preened and waterproof down coat, and you have a creature prepared to happily play in the snow all day.

The woman’s face is full of youth and bright in the first picture. Seven years later, her skin is suffering from major fat loss and sagging. Her eyes are shrinking in size and dull. The woman is also in the early stages of “meth mouth.”

A white Cotton Patch gander wearing a green leg band is standing on top of a black rubber tub full of blue and white duck eggs. He has mistakenly fallen in love with his human keeper and is behaving as if the tub holding the collected day's fresh eggs is the human's secret nest. He has been hunting for this nest for weeks. He's been stalking the human everywhere, but politely at a distance, waiting for her to lay an egg. He is being extremely gentle with the eggs. His great, big, pink webbed feet are standing right on the eggs, but he doesn't even crack a single one.

This Chelydra serpentina is feeling shy, not snappy.
She looks SO FAT because her long neck can't fit in her shell without squishing everything else out.
She has no interest in biting anyone. All this lady really wants to do is to have a nice swim, nap in the sun, and eat some sushi.
I'm holding a fat snapping turtle, who has her head tucked into her shell as much as a snapping turtle possibly can.
