Skua squabbling over the leftovers 🐧

Skua birds. Two of them. Facing each other. Their beaks are open and they are squabbling over some Penguin flesh. The skua are brown. They are best described as seagull like in shape, but much larger. The bird on the right is facing the camera and you can see the pinkish flesh inside it’s beak. The bird on the left has its right claw on the Penguin flesh. They are standing on dark coloured sand. Green hills are blurred in the background.

This was taken on my iPhone XS max Christmas time 2021.
Kākā in Rakiura (Stewart Island) off the south of the South Island of NZ.
This was on the deck of the home we stayed at.

It is facing front on. It’s stomach feathers are a rich reddish brown. The evening sky is in the background. These birds would come into the deck and take the apple from your hands to eat. The sat there and talked to you whilst doing so. The Kākā have a number of sounds and their talk during this was one they use for socialisation. At times there were 6 or so interacting with us. It was an honour to be part of

8th March 2020, a wee boat returned to NZ from a trip further south. What adventures we had, & oh what we arrived back to. Some quick time to spend with family & to help those travelling with us, who had continued their travel in NZ, get back to their own homes across the world. Then into lockdown.

North Island Robin - Toutouwai

Picture of a North Island Robin. The bird is perched on the trunk of a small tree. It’s stick like legs clinging to the trunk making it perch at almost right angle to the tree. The Robin has mainly dark feathers on its body, except it’s stomach, where it has white feathers.

Caught 3 or 4 of Kakariki having a good ole swim & wash in the pond at Matiu Somes recently. Every time someone walked by they’d fly off and return as soon as the coast was clear. Because of the dappled light it was hard to see them at times
A bird called a Kakariki. The bird is so called as it is mainly green and Kakariki in te reo Māori means green. The bird is a parrot about the size of a small cockatiel. It has red feathers on its forehead and around the eyes. This bird is in a rocky pool having a good bathe. The bird is very wet

His arms are raised in celebration as he has just knocked quite a bit of ice off the bow. A picture of the crew member in the previous photo with a mallet knocking ice off the bow area. The ice is quite thick.

How it all started… February 2020 with a wee boat trip further south. First stop #CampbellIsland in the #SubAntarctic
Albatross, mega herbs and a sweet ship called the Spirit of Enderby
Albatross on Campbell Island. Sitting in amongst tall grasses, with its wings mostly spread as though it’s about to take off. It was sitting there like that almost like it was trying to stretch and even get some air flowing through its feathers Picture of a plant. Broad green leaves in backkground with a cluster of pink daisy like flowers with an almost purple centre. Campbell Island Daisy I think this one was called A group of 4 young albatross participating in a ritual called gamming. This is where one by one the select their life partners. The are in the ground amongst grasses as tall as them. Picture looking towards the bay whilst on a hill on Campbell Island. There is a boat sitting in the blue sea. The boat is called The Spirit of Enderby. We came to love this boat as our trip moved on.
