Came in expecting a simple idol vehicle, but got a somewhat gritty yakuza story mixed with sad adults licking each others' wounds. While idol movie logic does prevail in the end, this is a high-quality example of the genre. Yūsaku and Yakushimaru bringing their A-game also helps a lot.

However, I do really enjoy the framing of the typhoon as this epic event that changes the kids' (and the adults') lives. The gradual darkening sky and increasing amount of rain outside mixed with the on-screen timestamps goes a long way to establish a palpable time and place.

I continue to admire Sōmai's natural depiction of scenes with meticulous long cuts, and portraying characters as realistically flawed. However, I felt like I never really got to know the characters despite experiencing their drama. As such, it feels a bit flat on a first watch.

One thing that does hurt the film is that we know that the case is un-solved... so we know how it's going to end. But the attention to detail in portraying raw human emotion on the part of the imperfect leads helps it a lot. Meanwhile, the weird cop character lays it on a bit too thick.

Gritty portrayal of the infamous 300 million yen robbery. Amazing tension at the start of the film as the leads plan and execute the heist, and at the end when they get cornered by the authorities. It loses some steam mid-way as it shifts into a cop procedural, but solid overall.
