In 2021 we decided we needed a Hereward flag, banner or standard, particularly for the living history re-enactments. Nothing in the sources gave any description of a flag, although a standard-bearer is mentioned.
Charlie from Cantanware got in touch and we discussed possibilities.

A near contemporary source for Hereward is Domesday Book (1086) where the entries for a Hereward in South Lincolnshire in 1066 are universally accepted as being the same Hereward cited in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 1071. Curiously Hereward is not named as the holder of a manor at Bourne Linc's.

The Anglo Saxon Chronicle ‘E’ version is the primary source for Hereward.
The year 1071 reports on the fall of Ely to William the Conqueror, effectively ending 5 years of rebellion and that Hereward escaped ‘and all who would follow him; he bravely led them out.’

It includes Hereward's actions at Ely during the Norman Conquest & is possibly the earlier draft of the Gesta Herwardi.

Ingulph's Chronicle of Crowland Abbey is another source for #Hereward from the Fenland monasteries with the claim Hereward was buried here alongside his wife Torfrida. The chronicle, purported to be written in the late 11th C is in fact a 14th/15th century forgery.
