Excited to start my new role at MetDesk as a Trainee Meteorologist/Meteorological Research Scientist! Colorado has been fun, albeit an incredibly tough, experience. Excited to return to the UK - living in the US has really helped me appreciate how great the UK really is!

Completed my first marathon yesterday (Boulderthon). Felt like endless road at times and probably made more difficult by the altitude (1.6 km). Lost my mind a little bit worth it!

Thought I'd post something personal. Feeling incredibly incompetent today. I'm really struggling with my job and, honestly, moving to the US has been exceptionally difficult. I've been here six months and I've never had so much abuse at work, feeling depressed and completely inadequate.

Having been living away from the UK since March, these are some pretty extraordinary temperatures for mean maximum CET. To have June, July and August all at or above 22°C, that's pretty remarkable. Every single month since February in excess of 2.5°C is incredibly notable.

The images that came down from Mars yesterday had a Star Wars vibe to them, so I just did what came naturally

A little late posting this but last week I experienced probably the most arid conditions in my life - 36°C with a -11°C dewpoint! Wind was like a hairdryer. Interesting how the 850 hPa temperature (commonly used in the UK as a proxy for air mass conditions) doesn't, er, exist here... 😂

These really are some enormous sustained anomalies. Just endless warmth. Will we see it crashing down next month or could 2025 really be a summer for the history books? 2006 was similar (although with a far cooler June).

Turquoise Lake in Colorado. Here, the air pressure is a mere 700 hPa which makes running here quite challenging! I wonder what the equivalent "850 hPa" level commonly used in the UK would be here? Perhaps the 550 hPa pressure level? Running out of atmosphere! 🤣

Boiling point here is 89°C.

Life has been very busy recently. Travelled to the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado recently, what an incredible place. Also swam in an alpine lake near Leadville. Unique environment, air pressure only around 700 hPa which made running quite tough! UV index was also extremely high!

Fully into the toasty season now here in Boulder. Temperatures may be approaching close to 38°C (100°F) by the end of the week! Today, currently a pleasant 31°C with lots of sunshine.

Well into convective season here in Boulder, CO. Temperatures up to 30°C today but most days have an afternoon thunderstorm. Love it!

Feeling very lucky to live here in Boulder. To see 14k feet mountains just out in the distance is something else, looks very surreal. Boulder itself is 300 m higher than Ben Nevis in the UK.

It was 30°C in Boulder today, so decided to escape the heat with some friends at an altitude of 2.7 km above sea level!

Ticked off the Boulder life agenda: get a bike ☑️

Settling into my new home in Boulder, Colorado! Yesterday was 24°C, beautiful. The altitude was noticeable when running, at 1.6 km the town is higher than any place in the UK! Bone dry too.

All photos taken on different days recently. I could get used to this...

A post run pint goes down quite well in this weather ☀️

An anticyclone will be dominating the weather for the rest of the week. Freezing overnight conditions will be followed by balmy daytime temperatures of 10-12°C in Exeter. Beautiful!

I have passed my PhD viva with minor corrections :)

Nice bit of cumulonimbus today south of Exeter, feeling warm in the sunshine with temperatures around 15°C.

Just over a week until my PhD viva.

Simulation of the light intensity during sunrise/sunset. The colour scale automatically adjusts each frame. This was simulated assuming fairly dusty conditions (quite a lot of Mie scattering, which produces the haze around the sun).

Strange to see rain in Exeter today despite a region of relatively high pressure at 1041 hPa.

Always loved this chart from the Met Office comparing the daily air temperature in London in February 2018 and 2019. From a chilly 0°C first thing to a balmy 21°C in the afternoon, don't see that very often in London!

The last two days have been great in Exeter. Feeling springlike in the mild sunshine and calm conditions. Great conditions for seeing the planets and to top it all off I managed to submit my PhD thesis today!
