Why is anyone having any regard at all for what “suits” Russia? Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. They are the guilty party and should be brought to justice. A first step is for them to be roundly defeated.

A better peace would be obtained by Russia withdrawing entirely from Ukraine. Europe must work with Ukraine to achieve this without the US which, under Trump, has proved to be a treacherous ally. Otherwise Russia will attack elsewhere in E Europe.

Indeed but you could also justifiably say that America, under Trump, has become a treacherous ally. The truth is that Europe has to unlink itself from America, from the point of view of defence (with consequential massive gearing-up of its defence capabilities) and be self-sufficient on trade too.

If a UK govt (perversely in my view) decided to withdraw from the ECHR, it would presumably have to enshrine basic human rights in primary legislation? If so, how could we be sure that no future govt could ever withdraw those rights or whittle them away?

It was certainly wider than that. There would have been many who would have said “I know nothing about the EU. But I can’t stand the Tories. So if Cameron advises Remain I’ll vote the other way.” That’s one reason referenda are sometimes dangerous.

Trump is not going to do it. He has repeatedly promised sanctions which has resulted in Republicans backing off their own sanction proposals. But TACO.

If we leave the ECHR what rights will the govt allow us to keep? Legislation will be needed to create those rights. And how will the govt ensure that no future govt can remove those rights? Leaving is a crazy idea.

It’s almost too late already. Mass protest may be one way but that will enable Trump to impose martial law. A better way might be a general strike; that would paralyse things quicker. The world watches in dismay.

The only two Eur countries not in the ECHR are Russia and Belarus. Good companions, eh? More importantly will she legislate for us to retain the rights we presently enjoy, and how will she guarantee that a future govt won’t remove them?

Yes but amateurs like me (of whom I guess there are many) would not be able to distinguish Russian uniforms from Ukrainian. Being specific helps.

For those of us who are unfamiliar with details please could you tell us whether “the 35th” is Russian or Ukrainian. (Russian hopefully.) And please could you always do so in your otherwise excellent posts when naming regiments etc.
