Found this cutie while gardening yesterday. A Three-toed Skink! 🦎#auswildlife #backyardwildlife
A skink with very tiny legs and a beautiful yellow belly, held in a hand.

Hooray for migratory shorebird season starting 👏👏👏 #ausbirds
A Bar-tailed Godwit standing on a sandy tidal flat.

Wish I’d thought of that as a caption!

Did our spring Waterbug survey today. Please enjoy this video of the gills on this mayfly larva.

Gotcha! The Emu-wren decided to play nice today and let me take a picture. There were a pair actually, it was a great day for birding. #ausbirds #wildoz
A tiny brown bird with a blue bib and a long wispy tail perched in a twiggy stem.

They are a cat-sized carnivorous marsupial. Vulnerable species - seeing one in the wild is an incredible treat.

Oh these are wonderful! We don’t really have fences so I usually set my camera traps on animals trails. Mostly I get lots of brush turkeys, lyrebirds, wombats and wallabies. Quoll has been the bucket list animal!
wallaboo.bsky.social
The way they move is just amazing.

We've lived on this property for 13 years and I've been trying to catch a quoll on my trail cams basically since we moved in. Never seen one. But today one turned up and tried to break into the (fortunately secure) aviary. This is the most exciting thing ever. #wildoz #ausmammals

It started pouring with rain on our walk yesterday. Anyway fun fact turns out pelicans drink rainwater by just sitting there with their bills open. They even moved to align themselves with the direction the rain was coming in. So that's cool. #ausbirds #wildoz #pelican

A Wedge-tailed Eagle showed up at the wetlands yesterday. The resident pair of Black-shouldered Kites were very unhappy about it. #ausbirds #wildoz
An airborne brown eagle being pursued by a smaller white kite. A large brown eagle being attacked by a smaller white kite. A large brown eagle, looking up at a smaller white kite. The kite is screaming at the eagle.

Tawny frogmouth would be my guess too.

Yeah when I spotted this one I saw a dozen males but only two females, I do wonder how many more females were present but hiding too well for me to see.
wallaboo.bsky.social
He does! Though personally I think a better name could have been chosen, since you don't see the red rump from most angles. (And the poor female gets saddled with a name for a feature she doesn't have.)
A small parrot walking through the grass. He has a green head, yellow belly, turquoise wings and a barely visible red rump.

It’s amazing well these little guys camouflage in the grass. (Red-rumped Parrot) #ausbirds #wildoz
A brightly coloured parrot with a green and turquoise head, yellow belly and turquoise wings. He is eating yellow flower heads.

Oh these are pretty.

The way rails flick their tails while foraging is the cutest. (Buff-banded Rail) #ausbirds #wildoz
A bird with a mottled brown back, black and white streaked breast, chestnut head and white eyebrows. It is walking through grass with one foot raised and its tail flicked up. Reeds and yellow flowers are visible in the background.

This shade of blue. 👌 Male Variegated Fairywren. #ausbirds #wildoz
A tiny bird with sky blue cheeks, a black bib, chestnut shoulders and brown wings. The top of his head is brown because he hasn’t finished moulting into his breeding plumage.

I know it would be a terrible mistake but I can’t help wanting to bury my face in that tummy floof. It looks so soft.

Babe I got you a Rose (Robin). #ausbirds
A Rose Robin (small bird with a pink breast, grey head and white belly) perched on a branch.

I’d love to see a Roseate Spoonbill in person one day! So pretty!
wallaboo.bsky.social
So beautiful!

My seven year old described Royal Spoonbills as having a mullet and now I can't unsee it. #ausbirds #wildoz
A very handsome white bird with a black spoon-shaped bill and yellow eyebrows. And yes, a plume of feathers at the back of the head that could, perhaps, be called a mullet. The same bird, with its beak in puddle splashing about.
