Unfortunately, recent history shows that societies lost in a fascist fever dream don't let go willingly—they need to be shaken awake, usually by war and/or an obliterated economy. So sorry, but even if no lefty ever shoots a CEO again, our nightmare doesn't end without (much) more violence.

I'm not even advocating that as a prescription for this moment—despite the fact Trump is just as potentially dangerous as Hitler (yes, you heard that right). And S. Miller is more terrifying because he's actually more ideologically pure in his race-hatred than many Nazis who were bureacrats first.

Point being, Hitler and his fuckin' goons were responsible for that... and a bullet to the brain before he ever took power would have been a solid antidote—far better than platitudes about violence begetting more violence.

Mangione has no such support. He's endorsed by no political party, no cable news channels, and, most crucially, no former president stoked his violent behavior with violent, irresponsible, and fascistic rhetoric. He only has the support of SOME people online. That's it.

Except unfortunately the sides do matter. One has a decades-long history of racism, demagoguery, and peddling paranoid conspiracy theories to the point you can draw a direct line from the WH, to its media propaganda arm, to two dead pols in Minnesota (and plenty of other dead bodies along the way)..

And POTUS sent in the fuckin' military to help terrorize nannies, line cooks, and 9-year-olds. I've lived in Latin American countries where guerrillas fought against just such an authoritarian nightmare, using political violence, and were later elected presidents. It's not always so black and white
