Jerry Wiesner told me that when he was looking to hire someone to explore electronic music at MIT, Barry went one step further, pioneering many of the advances in digital music.

While I was running the lab, Barry was always someone I could go to for advice. He was a creative spark behind many of the very cool audio activities on One Laptop per Child, including a mesh-enabled orchestra.

We lost my friend and former colleague Barry Vercoe on June 15th. Barry was one of my mentors at the MIT Media Lab, where he ran the lab's Music, Mind, and Machine group. (For those of you who don't know him, Barry was the inventor of CSound.)
