They've been more than safe for the last 14+ years in it. Thankfully, I don't really have to care about them looking out for my interests, as they won't.

No, but the US currency isn't really backed by anything currently and hasn't been in over a century now. It's value comes exclusively from a complex mechanism of debt and interest rate adjustments among other things.

That said, there are cryptos already backed by the US dollar.

Agreed. It'd actually be pretty cool to have the increased transparency and ease of accessing it.
