Now: News Literacy Project. Then: WSJ tech columnist, AllThingsD, Recode, D & Code conferences, Verge, CTRL-WALT-DELETE. Opinions are purely personal.
23 years ago today, I made my best hiring decision ever and brought on Katie Boehret as my reporting assistant at The Wall Street Journal. She soon had her own tech column in the Journal, alongside mine. She also was on the original teams at the D & Code conferences and remains a close friends.

Here’s the Minuteman statue in Lexington, MA, where the first shots were fired in the American Revolution 250
years ago this weekend. I urge all who can to visit the sacred ground of the national park that includes the initial battles.

Today is the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride from Boston. Along with others, he was dispatched to warn the patriots at Lexington and Concord that the British were coming to arrest their leaders. Today, we need millions of Paul Reveres to arouse our country to the threats to our freedoms.

Dear @nytimes.com : How could Trump’s auto tariffs “stun” the auto industry when he telegraphed them in advance?

In all the tributes to the late great Gene Hackman, little or no mention has been made of his terrific performance in the underrated Get Shorty, in which he costarred with John Travolta. Hackman brilliantly played a D list horror film director who gets tangled up with mobsters. It’s one of my faves.

This new book on Biden should be interesting. Tapper and Thompson write: "What the world saw at Joe Biden’s one and only debate was not an anomaly…It was the natural result of an eighty-one-year-old man whose faculties had been diminishing for years.”

(From Reliable Sources by Brian Stelter.)

I have known Kara Swisher for more than 20 years. She is a great journalist and entrepreneur. And she has always loved the Washington Post. She would make an excellent CEO or publisher or even editor in chief, whichever she chose to do. And she would hire people committed to the truth.

33 years ago today, the Soviet Union collapsed, its captive “republics” became independent nations, and the long, dangerous Cold War ended. But, despite a too-brief period of friendship and hope, the biggest part of the old USSR, Russia, is again a malevolent, nuclear-armed state.

Happy Birthday to @karaswisher.bsky.social , my friend and longtime business partner and the Queen of All Media.

The winning team at the marshmallow tower-building competition during a Recode offsite ten years ago. @laurengoode.bsky.social, @edmundlee.bsky.social, @bonniecha.bsky.social, Jill Pendergast, Laura Scaglione and me. Happy to say the team has gone on to greater heights.

According to Apple Music, I listened to 88 artists this past year. But one stood out. #taylorswift

1/ On Dec. 8, Taylor Swift wraps up her two-year Eras Tour, which has been, IMO, the most important and impactful cultural event in years and has benefited even people who dislike her songs or singing. Financially and artistically, it has topped any previous concert tour. #taylorswift #erastour

Nine years ago today: Steve Wildstrom, one of the finest tech reviewers and journalists I have known, died of brain cancer. Rest in peace, Steve.

1/ Bluesky content moderation may work! I just went to search for my imposter (unsure if I could do so because I blocked him) and this came up! I’ve had no response from Bsky on my report or on the email I sent to their support, so don’t know if this is temporary or permanent. But it’s encouraging!

@support.bsky.team I have an imposter here on Bluesky. They stole my profile picture, my bio, my name and my handle. This fake has 8 followers vs my actual 18K +. One tip it’s a fake: the little sun emoji preceding the URL. (See screenshot.) I have blocked them. But please take this down. Thanks.

Every big or medium sized city once had a dominant local downtown department store that eventually died as malls and Macy’s took over. The Outlet Company was ours in Providence, R.I. (Photo lifted from Facebook R.I. group. Don’t know photographer or date.)

Most of you are too young to be on Medicare, but I can tell you it’s the best health insurance I’ve ever had (coupled with supplemental policies to cover added costs and prescriptions). I’m sure Dr. Oz will “reform” it, but we should fight to save its core features. You all may need it someday.

Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #52,816, one of the first 1%! Joined May 1 of last year. Stopped using it for months as I focused on Threads. Now I’m back here multiple times daily. (But still on Threads. They’re different enough to use both, IMO.)

Back when I was the Pentagon reporter for the WSJ, I covered two SecDefs - one from each party. Both were good. One knew all about running large organizations & budgets. The other was a scientist and Sec of the AF with a deep understanding of our most secret weapons systems. Trump’s pick knows zero.

Ten years ago today, Kara Swisher and I did a cameo on HBO’s “Silicon Valley”. It lasted like 3 minutes on air, took six hours to shoot. But we got our own trailers. @karaswisher.bsky.social

Every year on Veterans Day, I think of my late father, Jack Mossberg, who enlisted in the Navy soon after Pearl Harbor and volunteered for a dangerous post manning the torpedoes on a PT boat in the Pacific. My Dad’s generation saved democracy.

It’s there, but time-limited. I think Threads gives you 15 minutes to edit. See screenshot.

Somebody implied that you can edit your posts here and that’s great. But I can’t find how to do it. Tapping the three dot menu, at least for me, doesn’t seem to include an edit post option. See screenshot.
