On October 25, 1784, Sir Frederick Haldimand granted 950,000 acres to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy for their allegiance to the British Crown in the American Revolutionary War and for territory loss. The current Six Nations possess just under 5% of the land that was agreed upon.

Land claims seek to address past wrongs towards Indigenous people with respect to their rights to land and the use of land. These wrongs were perpetrated by different levels of government. From 1871 to 1921, Canada entered into several treaties with Indigenous groups in many areas of Canada.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and we honour residential school survivors and their communities as well as those children who were not able to return home.

The Survivors’ Flag is an expression of remembrance to honour all the children who attended the schools.

The Autumn Equinox is a significant and ceremonial time for Indigenous peoples. As Mother Earth enters into a new phase, we give thanks for the harvest season and begin preparations for winter. Today also marks the start of Truth and Reconciliation week.

Government-sponsored Indian Residential Schools operated in Canada from 1883 to 1996. The schools were a way to remove Indigenous people, their culture, and their traditions from the fabric of Canada. At least 6000 children died at Residential School.

For over 150 years, Indian residential schools operated in Canada. Wampum Records conducted the intensive research for the Indian Residential Schools Resolution, the culmination of many years of work. This resulted in settlements for former students, including those who suffered abuse.
