End of coal in Alberta ahead of schedule illustrates 3 key energy transition pts:

1) Targets and policy matter and can drive transitions faster than seen historically
2) Industry will always say it's not possible but often proven wrong
3) Repowering coal plants to gas is just 1 step. Need more.
Alberta's last remaining coal plant has powered down and is not expected to burn another lump

The energy transition will impact some communities harder than others. An understanding of place contexts is critical if we are to achieve just transitions.

18% of jobs in Neath Port Talbot (about 9,000) are in manufacturing. 4% are in tech/finance/ professional services.
I think that gives a pretty stark illustration of the impact on the local economy of job losses at the steelworks.

Every big picture idea about how the Energy Transition should happen translates to change at the very local level that impacts and is shaped by people who live there.

True of jobs, sustainable energy and "Just Transitions."

Nice to see some work that looks at how those big ideas play out locally
Oilsands workers are resistant to sustainable jobs, new research finds
Creating sustainable jobs that are regionally accessible, locally meaningful and economically desirable is the next big hurdle for Canadian policymakers aiming for a net-zero energy economy.

It will not. The shift from one micro-cosm to a similar micro-cosm, transitions the energy from one to the other. Nothing is created or destroyed, just shifted to another perspective

So what? Energy transitions are not about replacing components, but changing whole systems. I think we need to get much better at being upfront with the public about systemic issues and solutions, rather than just suggesting that individual tech can be swapped out.
