Respectfully, other Western countries have far fewer of these giant vehicles and have far better crash fatality rates. This is a systemic issue in the US and can't be blamed on the typical American's vehicle/car seat choice. But admitting that SUVs are destructive is the first step toward change.

Yes but foreign auto makers still make sedans, most of which are cheaper than even a compact SUV. American consumers have choices and most are making bad ones.

Yes it does, and things are definitely more dangerous now. Per capita vehicle miles travelled has gone up, and of course cars (SUVs) keep getting bigger and higher.
