🔴 GAZA — The Government’s Media Office says 127,000 of the 135,000 tents housing displaced people are uninhabitable and unusable, leaving hundreds of thousands exposed to severe winter cold without blankets, mattresses, or heating. Officials say the crisis is the result of Israel’s systematic destruction of roughly 90% of Gaza’s building structures, the displacement of more than two million people, and the closure of crossings for over 500 days, blocking 250,000 urgently needed aid and fuel trucks. Israeli attacks have also hit 303 shelters and 61 food distribution centers, repeatedly forcing displaced families out of designated shelter sites and leaving children, women, and the elderly sleeping on bare ground or inside makeshift tents that offer no protection from wind or rain. The lack of heating has led to tens of thousands of respiratory and infectious illnesses, the office said, with at least 21 displaced people, including 18 children, dying from cold exposure. The destruction of 38 hospitals and the shutdown of 96 health centers have worsened mortality risks. A severe winter storm with heavy rain, strong winds, and freezing temperatures is currently bearing down on Gaza, raising fears of mass casualties as extreme shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and shelter continue amid ongoing Israeli ceasefire violations. Protesters called on the British government to release the detainees. Demonstrations were held outside the British Council offices in Johannesburg, the British Consulate in Cape Town, and Durban City Hall, where protest leaders handed over a list of demands to officials. “They have been held without bail, and they are now really on death’s door,” said Madison Bannon of the Palestine Solidarity Alliance. She said some of the hunger strikers have gone without food for more than 60 days. The hunger strikers have been detained for over a year on accusations related to alleged break-ins at Elbit Systems, a UK subsidiary of the Israeli defense company, in Bristol, and at a Royal Air Force base in Oxfordshire.
