I think a degree of cross-compatibility is necessary to call something OSR, if you cant frankenstein it together with other OSR games then you're doing something else. NSR, maybe. And NSR is good! I love Into The Odd! But the compatibility element matters.

Our OD&D campaign has been going really well. It's a setting with a town, wilderness hexcrawl, and megadungeon, all with a weird twist and all of my own design. So far 8 different players have risked it all to change their stars. Many have fallen, but some fight on!

The DM’s number one job is to be a fair and neutral arbiter between the players and the world. It is not to make sure everyone is having fun. As long as the DM is fair and neutral, the players can go anywhere and do whatever they want. Their fun relies upon their choices.

It's strange to me that some players will be like "can I just roll to solve this puzzle? It's my genius character that's solving it, not me," but won't be like "can I just roll and the GM tell me where to move and what action to take? My character is better at tactics than me."
