This may sound strange coming from a Brit - but I actually think that Americans are too polite - and that’s part of the problem. Your journalists seem too polite. Your opposition seems too polite. You call the president “Sir” and all that stuff.

The same happened after Brexit. The subject became taboo for fear of offending those who voted for it. It still is taboo in the Labour Party and BBC.

I don’t think there has ever been a starry-eyed view of America here in the UK. I don’t wish to sound snooty, but that’s something I associate with less sophisticated countries! Okay - I am snooty.

I can’t understand why Starmer loves red lines so much. Does he have to be so dogmatic about what he will never do (whether it be Brexit, taxation, or choosing between the US and Europe) - especially in the last case, when it is perfectly obvious that he will have to choose.

This ties in with my intuitive feeling. Many used to vote Tory because they saw the Tories as the natural party of Government - as respectable “county” types - not because the party was “right wing”. The party is now viewed as less competent but also less “county”. Maybe the LDs seem more “county”.

Yes - but Chamberlain is a more cutting insult if you’re far right. Maybe Monbiot sensed that.

They were like guests asked to choose between coffee and tea in 2016. Many weren’t that fussed, but had to choose one or the other. I think Labour overestimates the brexitiness of those voters just as we remainers sometimes overestimate the remaineriness of our millions.

I think he is like the man accused of blasphemy in “The Life of Brian”. He might as well just keep saying “Jehovah” now , since he has nothing to lose.

Haha - yeah I know - I was trying to be preemptive!

I think people imagine an EV is like a phone - a device that loses most of its charge during the day and therefore needs a full charge every night. That’s not really the case for typical drivers.
December 1, 2024 at 9:26 AM
If this were Twitter/X we’d have a pitched battle. On one side would be a big gang of guys who have never driven an EV arguing that they are impractical. On the other would be a couple of people who actually do own EVs trying to counter them!
December 1, 2024 at 9:15 AM
We have an EV and no place to charge it at home. We leave it charging in the village car park. After all, nobody has a petrol pump in their driveway.

Fair enough. But I guess the people who notice the bias will block it and the people who are taken in by it, won’t block it! Isn’t it just like any other news source - people learn by experience that it has certain biases?

Is the point of Bluesky to block conservatives? I thought it was to block angry nasty trolls that can’t be reasoned with. I would follow The Telegraph or Spectator on here if they posted anything - just to see what they’re thinking.

If you drive exclusively in built up areas I imagine cruise control or a conventional limiter is enough - but in rural or semi-rural areas you are constantly moving between different limits.
November 18, 2024 at 3:31 PM
No - I mean a speed limiter than uses GPS and knows what the speed limit is, with no human intervention. I don’t think this is at all common - yet.
November 18, 2024 at 3:27 PM
Okay thanks - I’ll check!
November 18, 2024 at 9:08 AM
That was the one thing I disagreed with in the article. The taxi driver had a point - but the difference is that he probably wouldn’t want a speed limiter.
November 18, 2024 at 8:43 AM
I’m talking about a limiter that uses GPS etc and knows what the limit is at a particular point.
November 18, 2024 at 8:39 AM
I’m in favour, but it would be helpful if cars had (overridable) speed limiters. I’d like to be able to drive without constantly checking my speedo. I’m sure the technology is available.

Yes - but what do you define as “hate speech”? What about gender critical feminists, for example? There are legitimate differences between liberals which often arouse very strong emotions.
