Congratulations to Rocco Caprio, who successfully passed his PhD viva last month! He is now working in the department as a ProbAI Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Rocco’s research interests span computational statistics, applied probability, optimisation, and the mathematics of machine learning.

Martine was introduced to the sport just 18 months ago by a colleague and competes in the Women's Masters 5, Raw (naked knees) U90kg division.

Martine set 4 new world records (Squat 100kg, Bench Press 57.5kg, Deadlift 155kg and Total 312.5kg) and won the 'best lifter' award for deadlift. This success at the World Championship comes just 12 weeks after Martine successfully defended her European Powerlifting title in Wroclaw, Poland.

Dr Martine Barons, Reader in Statistics and Director of the Applied Statistics and Risk Unit in our department, has become 2025 World Champion in Powerlifting, Deadlift and Bench Press at the AWPC World Championship in Idaho Falls, USA! Congratulations, Martine!

This team proposed methods for estimating how long a person with injuries can expect to live. This information is needed by civil courts when they consider what compensation should be awarded.

The winning team from the 2025 Solve for X training camp! The camp is part of the work of the Martingale Foundation. Students who receive funding from the Martingale Foundation for an M.Sc enjoy a four-day workshop during which they use mathematics to solve a real world problem.
