I think they understood that it would be too epic for TV. People want to connect with a cast of key characters, and that’s impossible to do with a plot that spans a millenia (not including prior books, which span 25,000 years).

Aside from some character names and the most broad of plot beats, it doesn’t have much in common with the books. That said, if they stuck with the books, it would be even MORE epic and detached from the characters.

However, the Genetic Dynasty stuff is 100% TV plot and that’s really well done.
