“...when a company buys RECs from a solar project in California, where the grid is saturated with solar, it will do less to reduce emissions than if it bought RECs from a solar project in Wyoming, where the grid is still largely powered by coal...” Pontecorvo explains.
watttime.org
The current scope 2 standard treats all renewable energy certificates (RECs) as equal – but in actuality, each MW of renewable energy purchased can have far different emissions implications.

We’re getting close to the public comment period for the GHG Protocol scope 2 revision proposal, so it’s a good time to freshen up on what’s likely to be on the table.

The grid in this part of Illinois (MISO) is still largely fossil fuel-dominated and as a result, the project will displace more fossil fuels than if it were placed in a grid with cleaner resources.

Last year, Akamai, Teradyne, & Wayfair joined forces as a part of the consortium, teaming up to enable the development of the 135 MW Prairie Solar project in Champaign County, Illinois.

⚡️The project will cause 130,000 tonnes of carbon emissions to be avoided annually, by producing 300,000 MWh/year.
An image of a solar farm is the background, a yellow text box with black text says "Prairie Solar will displace about 27% more carbon emissions in Illinois VS. if it was built near Akamai HQ, in Cambridge, MA."

Companies are teaming up to pool resources for greater impact renewable energy purchasing, and the Net Zero Consortium for Buyers (NZCB) is facilitating that effort.

✅ By the end of last year, NCZB members had reached their goal of causing 1 GW of new renewable energy to be built.

This student-led project not only demonstrates how to push the limits of sustainability, bridging the food, power, and transportation sectors, but it’s also expected to avoid about 37,000 pounds of CO2 per year. How about them apples?

The students programmed the EMS to continuously make real-time decisions about how power flows. The cooler’s refrigeration and the truck battery are powered either by Solar PV or the grid, charging from the grid only when marginal emissions are low.
watttime.org
It’s not just a tool for transportation and a way to keep produce fresh — it also manages its own energy use to maximize emissions reductions. The system consists of a 13.2 kW solar array, an electric truck, an insulated-refrigerated produce cooler, and an Energy Management System (EMS).

It’s rare to see a humble delivery truck as a sustainability pioneer, but this one at University of Michigan’s Campus Farm is in a league of its own. 🚛

So, what good does that do?

Akamai is able to use that real-time marginal emissions data to more accurately report its operational emissions AND optimize operations by scheduling energy-intensive tasks during periods when cleaner energy sources may otherwise go to waste.
watttime.org
Exhibit A: Akamai, a global cloud computing network, works with a lot of data centers.

They have implemented real-time electricity consumption data across their data center networks to monitor energy consumption, and they’ve taken it a step further by integrating real-time emissions data.
