So it’s very strange to realize I may be successfully carving out a profitable path as an artist. To get solicited for and then accepted into an art gallery. To get told in no uncertain terms that I don’t belong at the craft fairs—apply to the juried art fairs.

And then get accepted. 5/

The people apparently crave bookmarks.

I, personally, do not ever USE bookmarks.

What do y’all want in one??

Happy family, friends, and feasting to you all! May you be as happy as MewMew, who is benefiting from every dropped morsel.

I don't want to sidetrack but while I'm guessing you've seen this before, it's been useful for explaining to others how I hold things in my head.

At some point I’ll make myself a nicer phone case. Meanwhile I actually got praised for skiving my shoe toe puffs—something a lot of folks buy premade to avoid this—correctly and without ruining them this morning. This is a large improvement from “here, skive [x] like so, you’re gonna botch it.“
November 11, 2025 at 11:17 PM
Krithika got “oh shoot, linings need to be narrower” “bet I can use water and a blow dryer to shrink this” “oh SHOOT leather dye is not waterproof” plus a little whale from the carcasses of failed wallets 1, 4 and 5.
November 11, 2025 at 11:10 PM
@laurejt.bsky.social’s leaf one is “learning about tooling and dyeing” and the black one “maybe thinner brushes” and ”how am I STILL cutting the dang corners too close,” though hey, they were already getting slimmer as I got better at skiving—shaving down edges with a knife.
November 11, 2025 at 11:05 PM
So I continue trying to make myself shoes that will suit the allergies. It became clear that to do so, I needed to develop knife skills with leather…and so some family and friends got *real* wonky wallets and such…and it turns out to be really satisfying!

Happy to talk about custom work, and would love to know of Massachusetts-area holiday markets still accepting applications (I’m like a month late for most, alas)

In unexpected, kinda terrifying life turns—I’m trying to get a small leather goods store off the ground this holiday season. Please consider checking it out! Thus far: keychains, valet trays, bag charms, a few custom wallets and notebook covers.

I feel like you may appreciate the latest tooling around then:

Again today since apparently I need to hunt for my awl in the cat’s favorite hiding places, but here’s 2-3 hrs of stitching a wallet and misc with carbon-something coated needles. Similar marks on my thumb and the other hand. Truly only visible because of the needles I use and the gd missing awl.
November 8, 2025 at 10:57 PM
Did two of these bag charms without the awl because they’re small, right? It’s four layers, sure, but pre-punched. Do I neeed to go find it?

Ow ow ow.

So it turns out that in addition to cured meats (duh), fish (duh), and seaweed (huh?), MewMew is a fiend for apricots.

Meanwhile Natasha still favors potato chips and popcorn.

oh boy, that there sure is an AI medievalism
October 22, 2025 at 4:11 PM
Would Great-great Aunt Arbeth have imagined her fancy marble tabletop being used to skive and tool leather? Probably not. But seeing as how she lived through the Depression, and the tables themselves are lost, I doubt she’d have minded the repurposing.

Like many of you, I'll be taking a stroll in my city tomorrow. If you manage to find me on the Boston Commons, you're invited to sketch in a segment of scales for the flag. Look for the woman in 1770s garb, stitching while walking. #NoKings

Folks who care about either violins or bag charms, feedback? Playing with different options.

That one is adorable!

Not sure how @basus.me felt getting chided for not Reflecting Sun to Chase around the living room on cloudy mornings.

This is End of Work Day, Time for TV Snuggles, which is absolutely adorable. (Photo credit to Basu)

Also since you’re a medievalist: yes I know Pangur Ban means white cat. Yes he was gray. First of all I thought no one would ever call me on it (forgetting who I hung out with), and second I was extremely concussed when I got him (forgetting who I hung out with).

Please enjoy this picture of MewMew, who is decidedly NOT enjoying the cold snap.

If anyone has cat-proof towel hanging suggestions, lmk.

I keep being so very glad I found a shoemaking teacher. Most recently because I was all set to chisel stitching holes into my leather before he gave me the most baffled look and pointed out the sewing machine in the corner.
October 6, 2025 at 2:01 AM
Lucked out and found a teacher for adjusting shoe lasts and, once I’ve got these set, making my own shoes
