Old-growth trees are nursery habitat for BC’s bats, but when those trees are logged, roost sites disappear.

To bridge the gap, we’ve built 185+ tree roosts structures. DNA analysis shows at least 9 bat species are already using them, many as maternity sites 🧵 @albertabats.bsky.social

In our latest interview, former Weston Fellow John Benson talk about his research on eastern wolves & his perspective on conservation 🌱

"The scale of what needs to be done can be overwhelming… but if we all do little things in local areas, those can turn into big things across broader areas" 🧵

One meaningful step is to amplify Indigenous voices who advocate and spread awareness of the day’s importance. Take time to follow, learn, reflect & carry that commitment forward beyond today. (2/2)

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation & Orange Shirt Day, we honour Survivors of residential schools, their families & the children who never came home. Honouring Survivors means listening, learning & supporting Indigenous voices year-round. (1/2)

The eastern wolf is a threatened species found in Algonquin Park & a few adjacent areas. To better understand their survival challenges, former Weston Fellow John Benson studied wolf populations closely - including carefully handling wolf pups for DNA sampling to evaluate their ancestry & survival 🧵

Through the Learning from Lake Sturgeon program, Moose Cree youth are building hands-on skills in water quality monitoring, exploring how northern rivers can shift in salinity, pH, and other measures as they meet the ocean.

Rivers are lifelines. They provide food, water, and connections between communities, cultures, and ecosystems. Protecting river health is essential and water monitoring is one way we can do that.

To celebrate this milestone, we’re inviting photographers nationwide to capture the beauty & significance of these places in the 2025 KBA Photo Contest.

Canada has now identified 300 Key Biodiversity Areas - including 100 sites vital for birds 🐦

These places are critical for biodiversity, from plants and wildlife to entire ecosystems, spanning wetlands, grasslands, forests, and coastlines across the country 💚 💚🧵

Canada’s boreal forest is the largest intact forest ecosystem left on Earth, with vast areas that remain largely free from roads, logging, and other industrial disturbance.
wcscanada.org
Boreal forests are essential habitat for many endangered and at-risk species including Boreal Caribou, Grizzly bears, Whooping cranes, rare lichens, and over 300 species of bird.
wcscanada.org
Canada holds about one-quarter of the world’s peatlands, the vast majority in its boreal forest. These peatlands store more carbon than all the world’s tropical forests.
wcscanada.org
Ontario’s boreal forest spans an area the size of Spain, and its Far North region is home to five of the last 12 large, undammed rivers left in North America.
wcscanada.org
Canada contains 28% of the planet’s entire boreal forest zone - some 552 million hectares - covering just over half of Canada’s land area.
