100/1000 year event are poor ways of conveying flood extremes. Many in the public perceive it to mean it won't happen for another 100 or 1000 years. 100 year has a 1 in 100 chance (1% probability) of being equaled or exceeded in any given year AT A LOCATION. Many reports/articles botching it too
