Yeah, those Civil War generals would have no place in today's army. Especially the guy the sideburn is named after.

Kind of a moot question at this point.

Ten years ago Trump did his infamous ride down the escalator to announce his presidential bid. Today the escalator stalled on the way back up. I think the escalator is trying to tell us something.

"Violence and arms can never resolve the problems of men." - Pope John Paul II

The veneer of manners and civility of Trump's Rose Garden Club cannot mask the barbarism and malignant moral rot of those who reject the rule of law and justice in order to bask in the stench of power. God have mercy.

"The darkness first takes our children who then kill our children, using the guns that are easier to obtain than aspirin. We sacralize death's instruments and then are surprised that death uses them." - Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, TX

86 years ago today, Pope Pius XII called for peace to avert impending conflict. "It is by the force of reason, not the force of arms, that justice makes its way. Empires not founded on justice are not blessed by God." Nazi Germany invaded Poland a week later launching the Second World War.

Calvin and Hobbes sort of grappled with this issue 40 years ago.

"Skywatcher" (1948) by Marion Perkins. The African American artist created the work as a memorial to the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, though he felt no such public memorial would be possible in the US until far in the future. May there never again be victims of nuclear holocaust.

"Indeed, true peace demands the courageous laying down of weapons—especially those with the power to cause an indescribable catastrophe. Nuclear arms offend our shared humanity and also betray the dignity of creation, whose harmony we are called to safeguard." - Pope Leo XIV

Great exhibit at the Smithsonian African Art Museum on the Nigerian artist Bruce Onobrakpeya and a series of prints he made from the 1960s depicting Christian iconography. Here is the risen Christ appearing before the disciples.

Apparently Kurt forgot he visited Dante's hell with the X-Men and Dr. Strange and met Lucifer himself. About as Catholic as you can get.

The United States should not bomb Iran or attempt regime change. As Pope Paul VI pleaded sixty years ago before the United Nations, "No more war, war never again." Nobody seems to have listened. It would be a good time to start.

The first American pope. I was not expecting this.

I've spent way too much time reading about the various papal contenders. Whoever the cardinals elect won't be another Francis, or another John Paul II for that matter, but his own man. May they choose wisely.
