My first post had better be good, so here’s my best picture of my favourite lineup of my favourite group, taken at The Venue, Victoria on Monday 7th December 1981.
L-R Riley, Smith, Burns, Hanley S, Hanley P, Scanlon.
And the Olympus half-frame camera which I smuggled past security to take it on.
The Fall, on stage at The Venue, London, December 1981 showing the full lineup of Marc Riley, Mark E Smith, Karl Burns, Steve Hanley, Paul Hanley & Craig Scanlon. A 1970s Olympus Pen-EE half-frame camera, which took the photo featured in this post.

An older show!
I must have been keen to get ticket number 2!

You missed one!
Mind you, so did the rest of the world in 1985.

The Reindeers - Hysterical Home. Reinophone Records. 1985
Ragged rocking harmonies recorded in an empty ex-shoe factory in Norwich.

Ex-Farmer’s Boys! Saw Baz the singer at the weekend and Ed the drummer lives 2 doors away.

Still have the album with the snake man poster folded inside!
Bill & Tony went on to form The Screaming Blue Messiahs, probably the best live band in the UK at the time.

Lovely to be reminded of Sprowston, which was still mostly fields around our house near Blue Boar Lane when I was a nipper.
Grandad Curtis built a number of the dwellings in Sprowston & Salhouse between the wars.
My parents and grandparents are buried in the cemetery at the church.

An iconic NME cover, included in the excellent exhibition of Dennis’s images at the Photographers Gallery, running until 28 September.

Magnificent.
My first proper ‘punk rock’ gig was The Killjoys at the Stuart Hall, Norwich in 1977 and he hasn’t disappointed me since!
Many happy returns, Mr Rowland.

What an incredible piece of music.
Thanks for sharing.

Helluva good live band!
Photographed them many times.
Here they are in March 1982, tearing up the Gala Ballroom, Norwich (the night before Country classics with Wichita and Delta Dawn, judging by the poster behind).

A delightful chap to spend a few hours with. My portrait from February this year.

Ah, the Lyceum was a great venue.
Drove down from Norwich after scanning the Sounds gig guide and spotting who was 3rd on the bill, parked right outside, ran in (having bought tickets ON THE DOOR) and entered the hall to hear Moz say ‘Thank you and good night’.

Go well, Ozzy.
A king of rock, who wasn’t afraid to lend his unmistakable tones to unexpected collaborations.
One of my favourites… x

Yes, sadly about a month before the Norwich gig. But Steve Hillage put in a sterling performance!

That’s wonderful! All these years later, we’re in the same (virtual) room.
I was just 14, desperate to see a live band and my parents said I could choose from the next shows at St Andrews Hall. I went to Gong as it was a week earlier than some group called Can!

The front cover of the programme from my first ever gig!

Yes - chuffed with the phone camera that day! it was actually hugely emotional to hear the songs I’d adored for so long performed live. I had tears in my eyes while singing along with ’Curse your mother, blessed mother’!

After decades of waiting, I finally got to see Vic and the Subway Sect on the streets of Somerstown a number of years ago - still stunning! And spotted @birmingham81.bsky.social in the flesh during their set - bonus!

That’s what 12” singles were made for! Utter gorgeousness. X

Rank and File, what a great band!
Criminally underrated.
Gorgeous selections as always, sir.
