I live in South Ayrshire and can confirm that cooncillor's statement is - to use a technical economics term - a load o shite

It’s a sign of how far to the right British politics have been driven that the extremist idea of leaving the ECHR is now mainstream. The correct response by a journalist when a British politician says they want to leave the ECHR ought to be an incredulous: "Are you out of your tiny mind?"

I warned about this possibility a few weeks ago.

My husband has ILR. He has been employed & paying UK taxes since he moved to the UK. We paid £16K in Home Office and lawyer fees to get him ILR. He came to the UK legally, we obeyed all the laws & met all the conditions. Now we have had to borrow £2K so he can apply for citizenship.

Spanish has been spoken in what is now the USA since the 15th century, longer than English. 59 million Americans speak Spanish, the second largest number of Spanish speakers of any country in the world. But MAGA is in meltdown because someone is singing in Spanish at the Superbowl.

The Tories' Scottish branch manager Russell Findlay wants to be a populist politician. His problem is that you can't be a populist when most people haven't heard of you and you're not at all popular with most people who have heard of you.

People need to be aware that leaving the ECHR opens the door to reinstating the barbarity that is the death penalty. Protocol 13 commits member states to the abolition of the death penalty under all circumstances. Leaving the ECHR allows a future Westminster Govt to bring it back.

I think it's paywalled anyway. It's just the latest chapter in McKenna's on-going "Christians are the most oppressed group on the planet" bullshit. Although what's Christian about sectarian marches I'm none too sure.

I locked my account last year. I don't want to delete it in order to prevent anyone taking the weegingerdug user name, but I have not engaged with Twitter since last year, and now rarely even look at it.

I haven't looked at that racist cesspit of a platform for months. I don't miss it.

I have a real problem with so-called 'gender critical' gay men and lesbians who know from personal experience that sexual orientation is not a 'lifestyle choice' but who seem to believe that gender identity is. Straight people have an excuse, they don't.

No one suddenly decides - I'm going to be gay (or trans) because they saw a gay or trans character on a TV show. If it was that easy to 'turn' folk gay or trans there would be an awful lot more of us. But bigots gonna bigot.

Elon Musk is having a meltdown over a Netflix show with a trans character that was cancelled 2 years ago.

As a gay man in my 60s I saw this shit in the 70s & 80s. Bigots insisted that being gay, as they insist now about trans folk, is a lifestyle choice & we 'recruit kids'. It's the same playbook.

I wouldn't agree that Sassenach is an insult. Gaelic Sasanach just means English, but the English language is Beurla, a contraction of Old Irish Íarn-bélrae, the iron speech, so called because it sounded harsh or hard. Scots Sassenach is used more in a jocular sense than as a deliberate insult.

I think those of us in Scotland who resent having Brexit imposed upon us against the will of the majority of Scots should adopt a new word which more accurately describes Brexit for what it really is. I suggest the Gaelic Sasamach, a portmanteau of Sasann 'England' and a-mach 'out'.
