a thing we have missed here is that the criteria for victory are unclear. direct concessions of defeat are vanishingly rare. what usually happens is the other person just stops replying or blocks, and interpreting those events as victories is questionable.

i can think of 2 reasons:
- people don't actually want to win arguments, they want to feel righteous
- too much friction, especially for the state of mind people tend to be in while arguing with strangers on the internet
