Many of the dead will have served below, & would have been unable to escape before the ships sank. One was Chief Engine Room Artificer Harry Hector Wood, BEM. Harry Wood was a long-term member of the Royal Navy, having served for well over 20 years, and having worked his way up from Boy to CERA.
