Been playing X-Men Legends for the PS2. Game's a bit dry and the constant-level ups break up the pace too much. But there's a recreation of the X-Mansion you go to between missions. Not many side-activities, but the extras menus are in-game items, like Collosus' paintings for concept art. Very cool.

Hollow Knight: Silksong: It’s SKONG. I genuinely did not have very high expectations going in, but when I got to the citadel, the music started getting more godly, when the terror of this whole location enveloped me and yet I could not escape its beauty, they got me. They fucking got me dude.

Angeline Era: The most adventurous adventure you can embark on right now. You go here and go HUH? You go there and go OH. You slash as you bump into things, get tricked, duped even, bamboozled in the best way, and I love it. Also left me just, just shook. Highest of recommendations.

Rain World: The Watcher: We love a brand new take at Rain World gameplay. More disjointed, calling back to the chaos and uncertainty of the original Survivor campaign more than anything since then. Rain World, by now, is its own medium, and this is one of its very best renditions.

Consume Me: One of those games where I know it will be some people’s all-time favorite, so I always want to shout it out. Casual sim game, really varied, great at getting itself across. Unapologetically personal: doesn’t have all the answers but has all the stories, is incredible at telling them.

Haste: Landfall, aside from releasing Peak with Aggro Crab, released this masterpiece in 2025. An endless runner-style platformer game that is more about landing than it is about jumping. The reverse verticality focus is addicting and the music is unbelievably exciting. At highest speeds, I melt.

despelote: If you come from a smaller country that randomly gets obsessed with a sport just because we’re finally good at something, despelote will hit like crack. If you’re from the USA where you’re the best at most things, learn how we little folk feel. Love that friction with the ball controls.

Blue Prince: Yeah, yeah, it’s that good. Has that modern “casual vs insane person” mentality of letting everyone in but keeping a few of us insane enough to keep going trapped for what feels like an eternity. Just, so many OHHHHHHH THAT’S WHAT IT IS moments.

OFF: Remake of this wonderful, organic story of indie success. Great new fights, music, as good as it is, obviously can’t live up to the legend. But that’s still freely available too. If you haven’t played in a while, it’s worth throwing a bit of money to the creators of a cool reimagining.

Artis Impact: An extremely offputting game that keeps you guessing why characters or the world are the way they are until the very end. Pixel-by-pixel crafted art and animations. Life sim/RPG that has this feeling like everything could collapse at any second. Fascinating to explore as an outsider.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo: Haven’t played many platformers in this Zelda style, not sure if they’re more common, but this was very novel for me! Could take or leave the combat, but I absolutely loved the exploration. Cheater badges are awesome. Amazing Gameboy Advance risk-reward structure!

I, Robot: Another Atari joint, this time with the legendary Jeff Minter: the absolute ruler of flashing lights games. Sparkled with puzzle platforming goodness, a high-score chasing rush, comedy bits, it’s an amazing mishmash that totally nails all it’s going for.

Carimara: Beneath the Forlorn Limbs: Perfect length mystery game. An astonishing diorama in a unique style. Way more hidden beneath the surface for those with the nose for secrets. Short, so the less I speak, the better.

Primal Planet: A deviously straightforward metroidvania that ends up feeling way more like just a slick action platformer. Dinosaurs look incredible, everything sounds incredible, action is messy in a fun and tense way. Sense of a growing community, family. Chaotic, short, pretty, raw, co-op.
December 20, 2025 at 4:42 PM
Wheel World: I only grew to appreciate it more with each passing day. A slightly messy launch with other bikers flying around in the late-game, but when it really immerses you in the bicycle racing and the music, even though it could use more songs, it’s bliss. Could do without the exploration too.

Breakout Beyond: Atari had a really solid year, I know they’re a pretty significant, big publisher but they’ve been doing this thing where they hire indie creators to work on their IPs and I love the shit out of this, so shoutout. Super pretty lights go crazy at higher speeds by devs of bit.trip.

Super Mariomon: I like the short Pokemon structure a lot! I don’t think it quite nails it for me, the main story is a bit too standard to push me to do the optional content, which I have to assume is much cooler, to instead lean on a bit of memery. Would love to see more hacks like this though.

Ratatan: Patapon people made new Patapon, it ruled, more news at 11. I have my gripes with the roguelite structure but, dude, launch into multiplayer every now and then and go fkn wild. It’s crazy out there. Amazing, happy vibes.

Peak: I ain’t writing allat you’ve seen it two hundred times. It deserves all it got for delivering a cheap way to really make moments with your friends. Brought together a bunch of people who never played games with me before, something magical about that.

Dreams of Aether: Given away for free on April’s Fools, a short minigame collection, Warioware-style, that pulls its punches for a purpose —that being an amazing final boss/level. I enjoy popping it on sometimes just to play that. Doesn't take long to get there either.

Misc. A Tiny Tale: Absolutely adorable, though very Unreal Egine-y in a bit of an unappealing way. A story with lots of heart, largely aimed at a younger crowd. Wish it had a few more movement options, but the floatiness kind of works. For fans of cozy 3D platformers and Chibi Robo.
December 20, 2025 at 4:42 PM
Demonschool: A genuine indie epic that I can see really hitting for others way more than it did for me. There’s hundreds of tactics puzzle battles here, way too many for my taste, but if you really fall in love with the amazing aesthetic and music, it’ll get ya. Many people to kiss.
December 20, 2025 at 4:42 PM
Inayah: Life After Gods: Played on release, since then they committed to improving it. For a metroidvania focused on combat, the effects are quite weak, but I think its greatest strength is that it quickly gives you all the tools you need to explore the full map and lets you go nuts.
December 20, 2025 at 4:42 PM
April Grove: For ex-Runescape addicts who just want one more hit without committing. So, like, a Runescape vape? Very cute, I like all the NPCs, there’s a satisfying moment where you realize you can animation cancel to chop faster, but I wish the different axes or foods added just a little more.
December 20, 2025 at 4:42 PM
The Stone of Madness: Almost perfectly up my alley. I love compact ideas and stealth, but it feels like the two don’t go together super well here. Survival mechanics also feel like a waste in this beautifully animated game. Captivating story, just wish the whole experience was less time-wastey.
