There are still many zine distros that are thriving.

Yeah and it's felt like that for a long time now.

The real kicker for me was when they put two key characters in a box, cautioned that they might be trapped there for all eternity, and didn't give them, like... a chair? Or something to read?

Because as you say how can we trust 'disruptive' publishing models now, even if the publishers were doing it right?

Also, I agree with you that we should never blindly trust people who are leading on things like this. It's very hard though. If we don't support new ideas nothing ever changes. Maybe the even bigger crime beyond what they've done directly to these authors is the damage it's done to the model itself
