It's just like how in Star Wars the years of events are referred to at BBY (Before Battle of Yavin) or ABY (After Battle of Yavin).

The letter made Zola hated by the 'anti-Dreyfusards'. He was sued for libel, lost his role in the army and at one point moved to live in Britain. There is even suspicion that he was actually murdered for releasing 'J'Accuse'.

Zola sent the open letter 'J'Accuse' to the President of the French arguing that Dreyfus was innocent and the accusations based on Anti-Semitism (Dreyfus was Jewish). It later turned out that Zola was right.

In 1894 a French army officer named Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly accused of spying, stripped of his rank and sent to a penal colony in South America called 'Devil's Island'.
