My federal employer: everybody back in the office NOW.

Also my federal employer: oopsie somebody with measles roamed the halls and now hundreds of you have been exposed.

I was recently reinstated as a contractor in my formerly federal job. The agency was crushed and lost over 50% of its staff. Somebody asked me what it’s like, and the only way I could describe it was like walking through a house the day after a fire. (1/2)

In his final years with dementia, my grandfather would often be confused about where he was, and would steal things that he either thought had value, or that caught his eye. Seeing scenes from Trump the FIFA World Cup was like watching my grandfather’s dementia again.

I’m unemployed right now because of these two chucklefucks so yeah, I’m gonna make time to enjoy watching them destroy themselves.

1/ I took the latest DoD deferred resignation. Why? Because it has been made clear to me that my job will no longer be supporting fundamental research but instead cancelling DEI grants and policing grant language. I have loved my job and I’m sad. But I love the idea of fundamental research and

People point out that so far He Who Shall Not Be Named has spent about 25% of his time golfing and it has cost absurd money. I understand and share the outrage. But also, I would so happily have had him spend 100% of his time golfing at whatever the cost if only he’d left everything else alone.

One really “neat” aspect of being a fired Fed is that the ethics rules for my next employment allegedly still apply. I’d be a competitive candidate for industry positions, save for the fact that I’m not able to work with the agency from which I was terminated by DOGE.

Some guidance for DoD folks. It’s refreshing to finally see even this tiny bit of pushback.

“Efficiency” is relocating a bunch of remote DoD civilians into DC to work in person, paying each of them the higher locality percentage and putting them on PCS leave and paying for the move. They’ll probably get terminated anyway.

Are we great again yet?

I’m aware of at least one DoD office where employees were teleworking because their building was condemned and there was no place else to go. Today they had to report to a rented conference room where they all sat at a single conference room table. We are really winning aren’t we? 🙄

My division will return to the office on Monday. We’ve been cautioned that there aren’t desks for most of us, and there isn’t enough bandwidth for all of our computers at once. I’m anticipating that our work will grind to a halt, making a great excuse to gut us in the near future.

All of my representatives seem to have full voicemail boxes today. Only so many of the messages can actually be from me. Keep it up, citizens. We CAN make enough noise.

I’m going old school with paper and pen now until I can leave more messages.

Let me give a concrete example of the importance of applications with high risk-high reward as well as the role of NIH staff in taking risks.

Decades ago, a physical chemist proposed ideas about doing mass spectrometry on proteins (when this was deemed probably impossible).
