Whatta bout Sumo
@whattathings.bsky.social
Chronically obsessed with everything, louder than you can imagine, autismo extraordinaire. I go by Whatta or Joel. He/him.

Sumo/D&D/Pokémon/Linguistics/Otaku/LeftPol
About a third of my Saturdays, due to different campaigns fluctuating schedule differently, I DM 3 different TTrpg campaigns on the same day.

One from 6am to 9am.
One from 5pm to 9pm.
One from 10pm to midnight.

Nothing could make me more tired. But nothing could be more fun.

Day 1 of the Haru Basho:

My agenda is that nothing we saw in Hatsu is any indication for anything to do with reality. So far, that would hold true except for the fact that Kotozakura still looks like his Hatsu self. Darn...

New Monster's Manual out today, was a fun browse. Lots of iprovements to all the core creatures. Gonna be a great toolbox moving forward. I really like how many fun reaction skills the spread throughout the whole beastiary.

Let's go!!! That is how you do it Hoshoryu. Thank god Oho pulled through for the rivalry to continue. Awesome job Kinbozan but you are out of here.
January 26, 2025 at 11:58 AM
I looked into all the playoff permutations. TL;DR Daieisho can still win in the chaos ending.

Find out everything there is to know below.
January 24, 2025 at 11:07 PM
I still don't believe in Kinbozan's ability to yuusho but at this point it might be more cope than honest prediction.
January 24, 2025 at 3:34 PM
My ability to incorrectly predict Sumo results is a statistical anomaly and should be studied.
January 22, 2025 at 10:05 PM
Not for one second do I think Kinbozan can pull this off. Abi was just the beginning of this guantlet.

This is going to be a 12-3 yuusho, and I suspect a mighty playoff. Right now, honestly, Kirishima looks the most fit to grab it.
January 21, 2025 at 2:58 PM
This basho is Drunk. Chaos era stronger than ever. Power vacuum twice as dense. It's a power black hole.
Hopium crushed.

Cool for Kinbozan though, big effort. Now do it against the San'Yaku and make me believe.

Terunofuji leaves active Rikishi duty a Dai-Yokozuna, a holder of one of the biggest comebacks in sumo history and one of very few to go on successful full Ozeki runs twice.

Legend.

That said, Hoshoryu better clench up and get this damned Yuusho now, I don't want a nokozuna era!!!
January 16, 2025 at 9:37 PM
I'm so sorry, power vacuum era of Sumo. I was wrong to pronounce you dead. The power vacuum era of Sumo lives atrong as ever!
January 16, 2025 at 11:19 AM
Day 2 Hoshoryu came to make a statement about his ambition. Message received, my leige.
January 13, 2025 at 1:44 PM
Hoshoryu looked like a different Rikishi today. Gone for good is the small trickster we saw rise through the ranks. This is a midsized strong bulldoze of an Ozeki, and I thinks it bodes well for his hopes of leaving the Ozeki rank in the right direction eventually.
January 12, 2025 at 1:47 PM
I have honestly not been this pumped for a Basho in many years. It really feels like we're at the threshold of a new era one way or another. The power vacuum years are coming to an end and something is getting established once again in Sumo!
January 9, 2025 at 9:59 PM
Maaaaan I want Hatsu to start already come on lemme skip this week!!!!
January 7, 2025 at 12:50 AM
Hatsu prediction:

- Onosato Yuusho (kokugikan buff)
- Terunofuji jun-yuusho
- Two failed Yokozuna runs.

Bonus Haru prediction:
Onosato fails his Yokozuna run in Osaka as well. (Traveling Onosato nerf.)

PLEASE LET ME BE WRONG!!!
January 6, 2025 at 10:31 PM
Onosho was the first new Makuuchi debutant when I started watching Sumo. Him and Takakeisho are also born the same year as me, and they were my window to learning different styles of Oshi sumo. Now both are gone from the dohyo far too early. Breaks my heart, but I wish Onosho the best moving on!

Ok what the hell. TomSka was a real timetraveler all along. Why does the "The Rasmus" guitarist in their 2003 music video for "In the Shadows" look EXACTLY like @thetomska.bsky.social I am losing my mind they are too similar.

The 2nd Edition AD&D dungeon master's guide is the strangest book I have gotten into reading for the tabletop hobby yet.
What an absolute mess of optional rules, core rules, PHB fill in, homebrew assistance and just general soap boxing about Roleplay games in general. How does one use this?!?!?
December 13, 2024 at 10:29 AM
My phisical copies of the 3 core rulebooks for 2nd Edition Ad&d today. Very excited. Now the long process of sticky noting the edges can begin...
December 13, 2024 at 1:57 AM
With my Sumo Rikishi Monk D&D character I have uwatenage'd a dragon not just out the Dohyo, but out of it's momentary plane of existence.

My life is perfect.
December 8, 2024 at 9:21 PM
I've spent the last week or so, and will spend the coming 2-3 months further, studying AD&D 2nd edition in preparation to be the DM of a campaign next year. And I can't help but feel like this guy right here is a Yokozuna in the making.
November 27, 2024 at 6:24 AM
One day, when the world is a better place, somehow @jonbois.bsky.social will learn about Sumo and write the definitive piece on Kisenosato's legacy in this sport. And when all the world know his brand of particularly poetic mixing of pain and triumph and then more pain, then life will be good.
November 24, 2024 at 9:34 AM
Well then. This yuusho race went completely against my prediction at every bout. I took the L. I'm sad Hoshoryu did not get it. But while he's not a favorite I still have nothing but love for Kotozakura and I am very happy we now have 3 Ozeki who all have Yuusho performances under their belt.
November 24, 2024 at 9:03 AM
Pretty crazy that Onosato's traitorous right arm lost him both his matches against the Yuusho leaders.
Hoshoryu grabbed it on the ropes, Kotozakura locked it on the ropes.
