#WhoMakesMoneyFromFacebook? SANCTIONED ENTITIES.
We’re kicking off this series with a closer look at how #Facebook appears to provide monetization services to entities on both EU and US sanctions lists. www.whattofix.tech/publications...

For the last few years, #Meta has said that Political Actors are NOT authorized to use its #Monetization services

.. and yet

Using our Meta #MonetizationArchive, we find that #Facebook has been granting access to political actors across the world.

But.. there is a big difference between #SocialMedia platforms saying they'll do something - and them actually doing it.

This is why we need #Transparency and #Oversight.

It's official - Today, #Meta says it will officially stop serving Political, Electoral and Social Issue Ads on its platforms in the #EU.

Meta ends (at least for now) political ads in the EU today. Per their ad library data, they've run nearly 11,000,000 different political, social and issue ads in the EU since 2018 and made around €800m from them.

We think you deserve to know whether politicians — or anyone — are being paid by social media platforms.

That’s why we built our prototype for the world’s first social media #MonetizationArchive.

Curious who monetizes on #Facebook? Give the archive a spin: www.monetization.wtf/about/meta-m...

Meta is the only major social media company offering ANY transparency into who it enrolls in its monetization services.

But what about other platforms?
#TikTok also prohibits politicians from using its monetization services, yet we have no transparency into whether or how it enforces this policy.

Money + politics = messy.

Perhaps that’s why #Meta’s policies prohibit politicians and political candidates from its #monetization services.

Yet our research reveals NUMEROUS politicians and political candidates that successfully enrolled for Facebook's various monetization services.

The #EU Regulation on Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising ( #TTPA ) is set to enter into force in October 2025.

Platforms *saying* they are not longer serving political ads isn't going to cut it.

But what do we do when there is no #transparency to allow oversight?

Google has removed its political ad library in the EU, including historical data. A big loss for transparency and accountability. Shameful.

#Meta doesn't provide consolidated info on who has access to its monetization features, but it does its revenue redistribution programs.

#Monetization services also include audience subscription and tips tools, which are featured as allowing social media users to channel money to these sanctioned entities.

If #Meta doesn't pass on that money, where exactly is it going? And why is it still facilitating access to these services?
whattofix.tech
As of Sept 2025, we continue to see several #Facebook pages affiliated w/ sanctioned entities boasting access to monetization services.

These include not just 🇪🇺 EU-sanctioned entities (including some we previously reported on) but also 🇺🇸 US-sanctioned entities.

#Meta has not denied providing sanctioned entities with access to its #Monetization services.

But it also didn't address the burning question of whether it had allowed them to accrue or receive money in any way 🤔

And what of other social platforms, which, unlike Facebook, offer no transparency at all into who benefits from their #monetization services?
whattofix.tech
It’s not just sloppy #MonetizationGovernance. #Meta could be violating the law.

We think there’s a strong case for regulators to officially start asking questions.
