New to teaching or, like me, at it a long time, this book is excellent. Really worth a read. Last chapter on faded guidance is really well done. 👍

Some thoughts on a new paper challenging CLT

A new paper challenging Cognitive Load Theory has just been published. I've been hoping to read a good criticism of CLT for some time but unfortunately this is not it. THREAD ⬇️ 🧵

Really enjoy this way of teaching. I used to do a mind map but timeline is way better. Start class with just a horizontal arrow and go from there. Stopping at intervals, minimise the screen and ask students to write down what I just did from memory. Low stakes, of course.

Routine is a huge factor here. Building one is difficult (my own experience) but the benefits are fantastic.

Teach in small chunks with practice questions to build knowledge in between. Practice makes permanent.

Students do not write notes when I am explaining, they just watch and listen. Questions from them during any break from instruction. They prefer this system. Gives everyone a chance to understand the key points.

The screenshot is of my own rough notes that I draw up for the class/classes.

Build up knowledge with students doing retrieval practice at start of class and for homework. Work towards Leaving Cert question at the end.

What is colostrum?
What is transition milk?
Why do farmers feed calves milk replacer?
What is meant by weaning?
Give an example of an efficient rotational grazing system used with calves.

Students know all the terms from the timeline as we have gone through them in previous classes. A quick check for understanding at the start of class with mini whiteboards, to be sure.
