“Revolutions come and go.
Recursions, however, endure.

A system will always try to rebuild itself within the minds of those who opposed it.

Breaking it once is not enough.
You must refuse to carry its blueprint forward.”

Few better illustrate the taxonomic uncertainties of “basal passerid oscines” than the Satinbirds. Long considered birds-of-paradise, their unique characteristics have earned them their own family.

Among them is the striking Crested Satinbird, a result of recent taxonomic lumping!

When it seems like the monsters are winning,
give a thought to the bigger picture.

Nature is coming for them.
Time is eating them.
History will give them what they've earned.

Turning away from empathy and curiosity makes the world into a grim, thin place populated by strangers, objects, and adversaries.
It's akin to demanding the biggest seat in the theater, even though it doesn't face the stage. It's trading a window for a mirror. It's a theft from others and the self.

A cardinal just landed on a winter-bare lilac bush ten inches from my office window.
Red feathers. Black pearl of an eye. Carrot orange beak.
He just clung to his little branch, swayed with the wind, looked at me and then flew off across the street.

What a world this is...

We are not our possessions,
but we are our gardens.
Within and without,
our story is told
through what we nurture.
