ok so i loved loved loved the case files of henri davenforth. idk how old honor raconteur but the humor in it felt very millennial in the most positive way possible. not only would i read a dozen more books in this series, but i would also read a spinoff series based on literally any side character.
the review: Btw: This review doesn't include the short story "First Encounter: The Shinigami Detective and the Royal Mage" because i can't find it anywhere. Please insert the ppropriate Fairly OddParents meme here. And while I'm airing my grievances, I knew from the very start that Henri's name is pronounced hen-ree, not on-ree, but that didn't stop me from constantly messing that up, and I think it's really mean of Honor Raconteur to do this to me personally. I'm being so serious when I say I would read a dozen more of these books if Honor Raconteur wanted to publish them. I found the romance between Henri and Jamie to De adorable, and Jamie is my exact type of dorky. The humor hit for me, the romance hit for me, and the goofy over-the-top characters all hit for me. I'm actually a little mad that I have no one to talk about this series with. Sometimes those Hoopla mendations are a bit suspect, but when they get something right, they really get it right.

Murder at the Polo Club: After spending the day at a polo club, one of the star players is found dead following a public argument with a member of the opposing team. Although some are quick to point fingers, Cleo is sure there's more happening here than an argument between the two men becoming violent, and she sets out to prove it. Sometimes when I read mysteries, I'm a little sad when the killer is caught because the victim sucked so bad. This is one of the times I think we should let the fictional murderer get away with it. At this point in the series, I'm also getting more than a little bored with the Cleo x Harry romance. Murder at the Dinner Party: Cleo is hired by the sister of a Mayfair employee to find out if the death of a butler was caused by more than the natural causes the police claim. The investigation yet again leads Cleo down old roads and uncovers old wounds. Together Harry and Cleo are determined to get to the truth. I actually think it speaks to how fun the mysteries in this series are that I continued to read them even though the main character's romance subplot makes me yawn. I'm also enjoying the development of the side characters, who are often ignored in cozy mysteries, where they're often just filler characters. If given a slice-of-life installment of this series, I would be ecstatic. Murder on the Brighton Express: While on vacation, Cleo is approached by a woman who attempting to blackmail her. After the two board the same train back to London, Cleo is concerned about the mysterious woman when she doesn't get off the train in London. With no evidence that she got off anywhere else on the journey, Cleo takes matters into her own hands. When doing so leads to the discovery of the woman's battered body, Cleo knows she must find answers before the police's ruling of suicide becomes the official story. Oh, this murder investigation was very fun.

Murder at the Orpheus Theatre: Do you ever finish a book and wonder why the author decided to attack you personally? There's no way they wrote such a devastating book without having you in mind! This book more heavily featured Anne Ramsy, a character suffering from dementia. Unfortunately, I tend to find depictions of dementia to be painful. It's awful reliving the experience of watching my mother die over and over as little pieces of herself floated away until finally, her body followed her mind. Irina Shapiro did a great, if painful, job with Anne's illness. Why she felt the need to continue to rip out my heart with the ending, I don't know. But I will continue to complain about it until the next book comes out, which the Internet is telling me will be in July. So I guess I'll see you all here again in July. Fateful Words: Everyone in the Scottish Bookshop series cracks me up. I love it when the characters are a bit outlandish, and I haven't thought about it before, but the characters always being so willing to discuss so much with a near stranger is both true to life and outrageous. I think to myself, "Who would tell all of that to a stranger?!" but there are so many times in life we get info dumped on by a stranger after a brief meeting in the grocery store; I imagine a traumatic event like a murder makes it even worse. I do need Edwin to quit being so annoyingly vague. Why can't he tell people things?! I understand the answer is "plot reasons," but I don't enjoy it. Haha. The Poison Pen: When Delaney visits Edwin's friend to examine an artifact on her property, things go awry. While Delaney and company are distracted, a young man is murdered, and as usual, Delaney won't stop until she gets to the bottom of the murder and artifact investigations and how they tie together. I always enjoy Scottish Bookshop books, and this one is no exception. However, I have to say that in no way did I relate to the characters' grief over the Queen dying. Of course, I also can't relate to much of Delaney's character beyond a mutual love of books, and that's okay. I still have fun following her shenanigans. I also highly recommend this series on audiobook.

Annie is on the cusp of two life-changing events: solving the murder of her college best friend, a case that has gone cold but that has never strayed far from Annie’s mind, and the opening of her own detective agency, a dream she’d given up on after losing Scarlet, but that is being realized with new friends. Somehow, I skipped the book before this, but didn’t get too lost in the overall storyline. I would love to read about the cases Annie and Fletcher will investigate for their agency, but I think uncovering and bringing Scarlet’s murderer to justice was a fantastic way to end this series. ake and Ellie are excited when a large catering order comes in, even if it is for the local haunted mansion. They’re decidedly less excited when their client is found murdered at his own party, and a local teen, suspected of the murder, runs away. As if that isn’t enough to worry about, Jake’s daughter-in-law is suspiciously sick, and Jake worries their already home, already bursting at the seams, may need to find a way to cram in one more baby. Can Jake and Ellie find the murderer, the missing girl, and get in all their baking orders? As always, Jake and Ellie are funny and ridiculous at the same time.

Danika Dizon has been waiting her whole life for her mom to give her a chance working a real case at the family detective agency, and when a client of her Tarot card-reading side gig goes missing, she teams up with the girl’s younger sister to find her. In their mission to find answers, Danika & Gaby uncover far more than they could have imagined when they first set out. Manansala’s first YA novel is as fun and entertaining as her Tita Rosie’s Kitchen series is. I can’t wait for the second book of this series (and also for the next Tita Rosie book as well!) Maryse Boudreaux, friends, and allies race to prevent demonic Ku Kluxes from bringing even more evil to Earth via a spell worked into the film The Birth of a Nation. By the end of this book, I was once again in awe of the importance of fiction. How much they mean to us as humans and to each of the groups to which a person may belong. The way fiction keeps history and cultures alive is amazing, and I love stepping into a story and a perspective that are so far outside my own. It took me a while to read Ring Shout, but I’m glad I finally got to it, and I’m happy P. Djèlí Clark decided to write a book that essentially beat me over the head with a reminder that fiction is vital, that stories are history, and that reading diversely takes you out of your comfort zone and little by little makes you a better citizen of the world if you let it. Humans are so cool in the way they yearn to share themselves with others and work so hard through so many different art forms to do so. Songs, games, books, movies, TV shows, and comics. Eve has spent her entire life training to take down the Knight, a creature who has spent decades haunting the lands of her mother, Queen Regina, where he promises to make anyone’s wish come true, but always with a twist. Some twists are simply potentially disastrous, but most are grumesome and heartbreaking. As Queen Regina’s mental state becomes more fragile, Eve prepares to face her country’s most evil foe. Well, you know if Kalynn Bayron writes a book, I’m going to read it eventually. Especially if she writes a retelling of my favorite fairytale, it would be basically illegal if I didn’t. I’ll be honest in saying that I didn’t care for the romantic subplot only because I didn’t really feel as if we saw Eve and Nova connect in such a way on page. Otherwise, I enjoyed this retelling and thought it was wonderful and sad. As all fairytales should be.
