To follow up on my previous thought. I suspect that in order for a company to set up its own financial incentives to serve its users a requirement is that its users must be able to choose its competition. That is, it should be easy to leave.

This way it loses profit for being a worse option.

Something I've been pondering:
Companies have no idea of moral. They only operate on incentives.
For-profit entities set up their own financial incentives.
Could such an entity set up its own incentives such that its own business model relies on it continuing to uphold a social good?
